Art from films by Kubrick

Keeping on with my internet community fetish, we come to the extremely packed Kubrick Multimedia Film Guide, a large site serving as a major source of information for the brilliant works of director and producer Stanley Kubrick. Contained within this site is a large (and growing) gallery of posters and promotional art from past Kubrick films dating back to the 1950s on through to Eyes Wide Shut. Poster and promotional pieces from films such as 2001, Lolita, Clockwork Orange, The Shining and Paths of Glory are on display, with more being added as the collection grows, which hopefully it does. The posters from 2001 were just pure brilliance, this coming from a NASA and design nerd.

Music video double-feature: Smog’s “Mother of the World” and “Rock Bottom Riser”

  July 31st, 2006 by Nerds

Smog

Smog’s Bill Callahan is one of independent music’s most prolific singer-songwritiers without a doubt. With a voice that is both deep and smokey that rises and swells with the tides and fits in perfectly when crooning songs of love hate. Texas-based Callahan began recording lo-fi at his home in 1988, releasing tapes on his own label up until being signed to Chicago’s major-indie Drag City in 1991, for which he’s still releasing. Recently Smog has been touring the world to promote his 2005 album “A River Ain’t too Much to Love” and working on his new album at home in Austin, Texas.

Both videos after the jump..

Collection of scripts for every episode of Seinfeld ever aired

  July 31st, 2006 by Nerds

Seinfeld and Superman!

SERENITY NOW!!! We love the Seinfeld crew here and are watching and re-watching episodes like there’s no tomorrow. While we consider ourselves hardcore fans, we’d never consider ourselves hardcore enough to recreate Seinfeld episodes in our living room. Which is exactly what we can now do thanks to the mega Seinfeld community site, Seinfeld Chronicles. Other than having info and trivia on just about everything ever mentioned through Seinfeld’s 9 seasons, they also have an archive with every script for every episode ever filmed, including the pilot-episode! As I mentioned before, I’m always amazed at the communal power of the internet, espcially when that power is benefiting a community I consider myself a part of.

Frank: You’re late again, Costanza, so listen up. Starting tonight, we’re having a little sales contest. The loser gets fired, the winner gets a Waterpik.

Estelle: (From another room) You’re not giving away our Waterpik!

Frank: Serenity now!

George: You know what? It doesn’t matter, because I quit!

Frank: I guess your mother was right. You never could compete with Lloyd Braun! (Lloyd rings his sale bell and smiles)

George: You wanna sell computers? I will show *you* how to sell computers! Hello, Mr. Farneman. You wanna buy a computer? No? Why not? All right, I see! Good answer! Thank you! (Lloyd rings his sale bell)

Serenity now!

Jay Moore leaving Garage Games

  July 30th, 2006 by Nerds

Torque game engine

Jay Moore, marketing director for Garage Games announced via his blog today that he’ll be leaving the Garage to pursue other opportunities, no doubt within the gaming industry (we can only hope). Jay was seen by many as the one of the driving forces behind the success of Garage Games, the Torque Games Engine and the success of Marble Blast on the Xbox 360. He’ll surely be missed and I wonder how he possibly could be replaced in a company which is still struggling to establish itself outside of the hobbyist indie games market.

MSN secures online syndication rights to Arrested Development

  July 30th, 2006 by Nerds

Arrested Development

Marketing Vox is reporting that MSN has secured the online syndication rights to Fox’s canceled (boy what a mistake) cult television show Arrested Development. This gives MSN the rights to add all 53 episodes of Arrested to MSN’s store featuring free, ad-supported video-episodes. This marks the first time that a major studio has sold a show’s syndication rights to a web portal, at least according to AdAge. Way to go MSN! Arrested was also picked up by HDNet for HDTV syndication and by G4 for normal broadcast syndication.

Senator Stevens willing to go on Daily Show to defend his “tubes”

  July 29th, 2006 by Nerds

Series of tubes!

We resisted as long as we could, but sweet Mary Lou what is going on with US politics these days? How out of touch can these politicians be yet still demand respect and credibility from their constituents??? Bah! So, back to the story. Anyone using the inter-tubes should know the backstory to this, easily persuadable (by lobbyists of course not by his constituents) Republican Senate Commerce Committee Chairman Ted Stevens explains to a room full of other easily persuaded senators that the internet is basically a series of tubes that gets clogged, thus net-neutrality should not be an option. He then gets completely torn apart about it, and rightly so, by the Daily Show in the sort of fashion that we all know and love. Well, word finally reached Senator Stevens (I guess his inter-tube is clogged because of all these top-tier services clogging them) and he’s now willing to go on the Daily Show to defend his statements, by telling reporters, AND I QUOTE:

“I have a letter from a big scientist who said I was absolutely right in using the word ‘tubes’”

Speechless. So yeah, watch the Daily Show video after the jump (as if you haven’t seen it already!)..

Google Search nerds!

Not that you needed to be reminded of this, but Google is definitely the powerhouse search engine of the interweb. Google clogs my tubes with email, search results, newsfeeds and even desktop searches on a daily basis, so it only makes sense to try and harness the true power of the Google monster and make it work more efficiently for me. So I’ve put together a short list with a few of my favorite advanced Google search operators that help make my research using Google that much more efficient and less time-consuming..

Live out of one bag the next time you travel

  July 29th, 2006 by Nerds

Travel

If you’re like me or half of the vacationing world, you end up with 2 or 3 bags full of junk when travelling, especially on long holidays. But thanks to Doug Dyment, my next trip will be lightweight and hopefully a little less stressful when it comes to check-in time. Doug has created a travel how-to named One Bag, covering what he calls the art and science of travelling light. His site is full of useful tips and how-tos on travelling light for your next holiday or business trip, such as different ways of doing laundry while on your trip (it seems every smart traveller plans on doing laundry on their trip!?) or the most efficient ways of packing and bundling just about everything you could imagine. Bon voyage…

Indie games television - Indie Superstar episode 3

  July 28th, 2006 by Nerds

Indie Superstar episode 3

The ever so lovable Ichiro and Mimi from Indie Superstar have graced us once again with a new episode of their quickly maturing video cast covering indie games, developers and fans. Seriously, I want to pinch the cheeks of these two everytime I see them on-screen. So yeah, I apologize for completely breezing over episode 2, but I wanted to get back on the ball and talk a bit about episode 3. The crew have made a few small changes, giving games a bit more screen-time and a little less banter during the in-game scenes. There’s also YouTube and Google Video hosted videos, which I’m sure is pleasing their growing fanbase and easing up a bit on their web hosting bills. But on with the show, first up, we hear and see a little bit about Dark Horizons Lore, the mech-shooter, which was one of last year’s hot contenders at the IGF. Looking good, even for a Torque-powered title. Next up we have a bit of wackiness, with a little Japanese sing-along which actually got me to thinking. What is the Japanese indie gaming scene like and why do I hear so little about it? If there IS a Japanese indie scene, what are their marketing and distribution systems like, how successful are Japanese indie games titles, and who are the ones making them? I envision a large and profitable market full of broadband-enabled customers, demanding high quality and innovative games they can easily buy, download and play, but, what do I know?

Broadcast - “Winter Now” performed live on CBC’s ZeD

  July 28th, 2006 by Nerds

Broadcast - Warp Records

We’re big music people here in the Bunch of Nerds universe, so it only makes sense that we’d eventually start posting music and videos from some of the artists and labels that we love. So, our first video in what, I guess, will become another new posting series, is from our beloved UK indie darlings, Broadcast. Hailing from Birmingham, Broadcast’s first few releases were featured on the Duophonic Label, run by their good friends in Stereolab, before the band was picked up by legendary UK electronica label Warp Records. “Winter Now” is a track from 2003’s “Haha Sound” on Warp Records and if you are interested in their latest album, the band has recently completed recording “Future Crayon” to be released August 22nd, 2006 on Warp.
